What is a Diabetic Diet?
For people diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor has probably prescribed you certain dietary restrictions along with your treatment program. According to nutritionists, there are no specific diet laid out for people with diabetes although diabetic people should pay special attention to the type of foods they are consuming. If possible, carbohydrate intake must be kept within limits and that intake of food should be closely monitored to keep your sugar level stable.
If you are used to a balanced diet approach, then the diabetic diet formula should not be difficult to follow. The following Diabetic Diet guidelines are recommended by the American Dietetic Association:
- Increased intake of starch suc as cereal, bread, and starchy vegetables. If you can, take 6 servings of the said food type.
- Daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Eating enough vegetables daily or snacking on fruits is a healthy way to get the nutrients you need while also keeping your sugar levels healthy.
- Reduce intake of sweets. Although sweets are not totally eliminated in your diet, you need to practice taking them in healthy amounts.
- Take enough soluble fibers. You can get it from certain vegetables such as legumes and carrots, beans, and fruits. These nutrients help to slow down the process of glucose absorption in your intestines.
